Corporate Social Responsibility

“…grant me wisdom to carry on business with honesty…grant me prosperity in business and the good sense to utilise it for the benefit of the country and people.”
Jamnalal Bajaj
1922

With these words a young Jamanalal Bajaj set out the basics of Trusteeship that has continued unbroken over 4 generations. That wealth generated must be used for service of country and people. From 1922 till now, members of Bajaj family and their companies and staff have strived to live to Jamanalalji’s expectations.

The Bajaj Group believes that social investments should:

  • Benefit generations – Bajaj companies invest in resource creation so as to benefit the society over long periods.
  • Educate for self-reliance and growth
  • Promote health as good health is a pre-requisite for both education and productivity.
  • Encourage for self-help- both individually and collectively, and
  • Sustain natural resources.
  • Be focused- around locations where it has a presence and hence can effectively guide, monitor and implement specific projects.
  • Target those who need it most, irrespective of their religion or caste or language.

Bajaj companies used the CSR provision of the Companies Act 2013 to further strengthen their commitment to society. While focussing on locations where the companies have historically had presence, the Pune based companies decided to pool their CSR funds to maximise impact. The five districts of historical and current importance to Bajaj companies were selected as primary intervention districts- specifically Pune, Aurangabad, Udham Singh Nagar, Wardha and Sikar. In addition, the companies also looked at addressing key development needs in the three States in which the key districts are located- viz Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.

Starting from 2014, the companies have contributed close to Rs 800 Cr to a variety of development causes through 450+ projects.

S No Issue Funds Contributed between 14-19 (Rs Cr)

The 160+ projects that have been supported in this period cover a wide array of issues ranging from malnutrition, strengthening grassroot government and NGO services, potable water access to creating best in class tertiary care facilities.
  • Projects in Education again address a wide gamut of issues. The focus has been on primary education – including both in-school and out of school programmes.
  • Infrastructure development – Water Conservation is a critical need in many parts of the geographies selected for primary intervention by Bajaj. The Bajaj Water Conservation projects in Marathwada and other areas cover more than 1 lakh Hectares. Water Stewardship and low-water livelihoods are critical aspects of conservation.
