Company focuses on application-specific products for precision industries while advancing major capacity expansion in Karnataka

Mumbai, India – Mukand Sumi Special Steel Ltd. is reinforcing its leadership position in India’s specialty steel segment through a strategic focus on high-performance, application-specific steel wire solutions for demanding industrial applications. The company is currently advancing a major greenfield integrated steel plant project in Karnataka, representing an investment of approximately INR 2,345 crore. Once operational, the facility is expected to nearly double production capacity to around 0.7 million tonnes per annum, significantly strengthening the company’s ability to meet growing domestic and international demand. The new plant is being designed with integrated operations and a strong emphasis on sustainability, including high reliance on renewable energy and environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.

According to Mr. Vipul Mashruwala, President of Mukand Sumi Special Steel Ltd., the company’s differentiation lies in its ability to deliver customized steel solutions tailored to specific applications rather than standard commodity offerings. “Our portfolio spans over 400 grades of alloy steel, including carbon steel, alloy steel, spring steel, bearing quality steel, free-cutting steel, and micro-alloyed grades, each designed to meet precise functional requirements across industries,” Mashruwala explained in an exclusive interaction with Wire & Cable India.

The automotive sector remains a primary demand driver, particularly with evolving requirements around safety, lightweighting, and the gradual shift toward electric mobility. Mashruwala noted that there is an increasing need for advanced materials that offer higher strength, improved fatigue performance, and precision, particularly for critical components such as fasteners, springs, and transmission systems. Mukand Sumi’s specialty steels are used in critical automotive components including transmission systems, engine parts, steering mechanisms, bearings, and high-tensile fasteners. Beyond automotive, the company serves the bearing and fastener industries, capital goods sector, and various engineering applications requiring superior performance characteristics.

The production of high-performance specialty steel wires requires sophisticated processing capabilities across multiple manufacturing stages. Mukand Sumi has invested in state-of-the-art facilities including a modern SBQ (Special Bar Quality) bar and wire rod mill with walking beam reheating furnace for uniform temperature control, advanced spheroidised annealing furnaces from global technology leaders, and automated pickling and phosphating systems. The company has also deployed Japanese wire drawing machines equipped with online German eddy current testing (ECT) equipment, along with online size measurement and surface quality inspection systems and automatic bar and coil handling systems. These technological capabilities enable the company to achieve tight dimensional tolerances, superior surface quality, and consistent mechanical properties essential for high-performance applications.

A key competitive advantage for Mukand Sumi is its integrated sourcing approach. The company’s products are manufactured from carefully sourced blooms and billets exclusively procured from Mukand Limited, ensuring consistent quality and reliability while reducing variability in downstream performance. This integrated model significantly strengthens the company’s ability to deliver superior products to its customers.

As industries become increasingly technology-driven and performance-focused, Mukand Sumi is responding to growing demand for materials with enhanced properties. Many of the specialty wires developed by Mukand Sumi serve as import substitution products, supporting India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The company’s products cater particularly to the bearing steel industry for critical ball and roller applications, automotive two-wheeler transmission systems, and high-tensile fasteners, contributing meaningfully to the country’s self-reliance goals in advanced materials.
