Remembering Ramkrishna Bajaj on his Birth Anniversary
On 22nd September, the Bajaj Group commemorates the 103rd birth anniversary of its former Chairman, Ramkrishna Bajaj. It is a moment to remember a leader whose life and values continue to guide and inspire the Bajaj Group.
Ramkrishna Bajaj believed that a business could only be truly strong when it is built on a strong ethical foundation. He never saw business as being only about profits. To him, an enterprise was a way to contribute to the progress of the nation, and a business was a responsibility held in trust for society.
That belief was shaped early in his life. As a young man, he gave up the comfort and security that came with his background and education to join the Quit India Movement. He spent four years in prison for his role in India’s freedom struggle. Yet, when people spoke of his sacrifice, he preferred to describe himself simply as “Mahatma Gandhi’s coolie.”
The phrase reflected his humility, but also his belief that leadership is about taking on responsibility and being willing to carry the weight of others.
When Ramkrishna Bajaj later took on leadership within the Bajaj Group, he brought the same sense of purpose into the world of business. He stood for fairness, integrity and high standards, and showed that doing business the right way is not only a moral choice, but also the foundation for lasting success.
The trust that customers, employees, partners and communities place in the Bajaj Group today has been built over many decades. It is rooted in the standards Ramkrishna Bajaj upheld and the values he refused to compromise. We inherit not only the businesses he helped shape, but also the responsibility to carry those values forward.
As the Bajaj Group continues to grow and explore new opportunities, Ramkrishna Bajaj’s example remains a constant guide. Through the way we make decisions, do our work and engage with others, we can keep his legacy alive and ensure that his belief in responsible and purposeful business continues to shape our future.
